WOMEN INTO HAIRDRESSING INITIATIVE (WIHI)
The Women into Hairdressing Initiative (WIHI) is another impactful project developed by Lodoac Brains to empower young women, particularly in rural communities, by providing them with valuable vocational skills that lead to financial independence. In line with our mission to empower women through practical skill-building, WIHI equips young women with the skills to succeed in the lucrative and ever-demanding beauty industry, with a focus on hairdressing.
Project Genesis
Launched in September 2021, the WIHI project emerged as a natural extension of our previous success with the Women into Tailoring Initiative (WITI). Understanding that hairdressing is an essential part of daily life for many women and a key industry in both rural and urban areas, we decided to focus on providing a skill set that would help women build their own businesses, enhance their livelihoods, and become financially independent. Hairdressing offers flexibility, creativity, and the potential to earn a steady income, making it an ideal career for women with limited access to traditional employment opportunities.
Project Overview & Objectives
- Objective 1: Empower Women through Hairdressing Skills
The core aim of the WIHI project is to equip young women with professional hairdressing skills that will allow them to serve their communities and beyond. By mastering the art of hair styling, cutting, braiding, and more, beneficiaries can build sustainable careers and businesses. - Objective 2: Promote Economic Independence and Self-Sufficiency
The project aims to foster economic empowerment by enabling women to create their own businesses or join the thriving beauty industry, which is an essential part of every community. - Objective 3: Enhance Personal Confidence and Social Mobility
Beyond just providing technical skills, WIHI aims to boost the personal confidence of the women by equipping them with a skill that improves their social mobility and standing within the community. Gaining mastery in hairdressing can lead to enhanced self-esteem and greater respect.
Target Beneficiaries
The WIHI project targets young women and girls in rural and underprivileged areas who face barriers to education, employment, or entrepreneurship. The target beneficiaries include:
- Orphans who have limited access to formal education and vocational training.
- School Dropouts who are unable to continue with their formal education but are in need of practical skills.
- Teenage Mothers who require financial support to raise their children and reintegrate into the community.
- Women from Poverty-Stricken Homes who face economic hardships and are seeking opportunities for a stable livelihood.
- Head Potters (Kayayei) who migrate to urban centers for work and struggle to find steady employment.
- Victims of Broken Homes who need access to an income-generating skill to support themselves and their families.
- Widows who are seeking to gain financial independence and security.
Program Structure & Implementation
- Training Duration:
The WIHI program spans 3 years, during which participants undergo practical, hands-on training in all aspects of hairdressing, including haircuts, braiding, weaving, and styling, as well as customer service and salon management. - Resources Provided:
- Hairdressing Kits and Tools: Each participant is provided with a full hairdressing toolkit, which includes clippers, combs, braids, hair accessories, and other necessary tools to begin their practice.
- Raw Materials: Women are also given access to hair products, such as shampoos, conditioners, oils, and other essentials to practice with.
- Business and Marketing Training: Beyond technical hairdressing skills, the project provides essential business management skills, including pricing strategies, client management, marketing, and establishing a salon or freelance business.
- Post-Training Support:
After completing the program, beneficiaries receive continuing support to help them transition from training to running their own businesses. This includes ongoing mentorship, guidance in building a client base, and advice on managing and expanding their businesses.
Impact of the WIHI Project
Since its inception, the WIHI project has transformed the lives of many women, giving them the skills they need to thrive in the competitive beauty industry. Some of the key achievements and outcomes include:
- Successful Pilot Program in 2021:
The first batch of WIHI beneficiaries are due for graduation in 2025. 256 women have been successfully trained and expected to join the beauty workforce or establish their own businesses in 2025 or work as freelance businesses, providing services to their communities. - Job Creation and Income Generation:
More than 256 women have benefited from the training, with 90% of them ready to start their own businesses or working as freelance hairdressers. This will create direct jobs and a stable income source for their families. - Increased Access to Affordable Beauty Services:
The program has helped make professional hairdressing services more accessible in rural communities, where such services were previously scarce or prohibitively expensive. - Entrepreneurship and Business Development:
Graduates of the WIHI program are not just employees; they are business owners. By equipping women with business skills, the project has enabled women to become entrepreneurs, improving their financial independence and contributing to the local economy.
Why the WIHI Project Matters for Investors & Donors
The WIHI project provides a powerful opportunity for investors and donors to contribute to the empowerment of women and the creation of sustainable livelihoods through skill-based training. Here’s why you should support this initiative:
- Empowering Women and Promoting Gender Equality:
Supporting the WIHI project is an investment in gender equality. By giving women the opportunity to gain professional skills, you are helping to level the playing field and contribute to a more inclusive society. - Fostering Economic Independence and Job Creation:
The project helps women become financially independent and generate income for themselves and their families. In addition, it creates new job opportunities in the local beauty industry, contributing to economic growth in rural areas. - Supporting Social Change and Mobility:
WIHI is about more than just hairdressing—it’s about empowering women to break free from cycles of poverty and build better futures for themselves and their children. As women gain skills and confidence, they contribute to stronger communities and improved social mobility. - Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
By supporting WIHI, you are contributing to the UN SDGs, particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequality). Your partnership helps foster inclusive economic development and promotes equality. - Scalable Impact:
The WIHI project has already achieved great success, and with the right support, we can scale the program to reach more women in more regions, increasing its impact and long-term sustainability. By investing in this initiative, you help create an ecosystem of female entrepreneurs who are not just surviving but thriving.
Future Goals & Sustainability Plan
Lodoac Brains is committed to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the WIHI project. Our future plans include:
- Expansion to Other Regions:
We aim to expand the WIHI project to other parts of Ghana and even across the African continent, empowering more women with hairdressing skills and creating more job opportunities. - Integration with Digital Platforms:
We are exploring the development of a digital learning platform where women can learn hairdressing techniques and business management remotely, expanding access to training and breaking geographical barriers. - Salon Cooperative Models:
By organizing beneficiaries into salon cooperatives, we plan to create collaborative spaces where women can share resources, increase their collective purchasing power, and scale their businesses. This will also help them access larger markets. - Ongoing Mentorship and Capacity Building:
To ensure that the businesses of WIHI graduates thrive in the long term, we plan to establish an entrepreneurial mentorship network, providing ongoing advice and support to help women sustain and expand their businesses.
