TRACTOR SERVICE SUPPORT PROGRAM (TSSP)
The Tractor Service Support Program (TSSP) is a transformative agricultural initiative launched by Lodoac Brains to address food insecurity and empower marginalized farmers, especially women, in rural communities. By providing affordable access to tractor services for plowing and cultivating land, the TSSP ensures that smallholder farmers can increase their agricultural output, improve food security, and enhance their livelihoods.
Project Genesis
The TSSP was born out of the need to solve a pervasive problem in rural Ghana: access to tractors for farming. In many communities, farmers struggle to access affordable tractor services, which are crucial for timely plowing, especially during the planting season. As a result, many small-scale farmers are unable to cultivate their land, leading to poor harvests, reduced food production, and economic hardship.
In 2022, Lodoac Brains launched the TSSP pilot project to offer subsidized tractor services to farmers in the Upper West Region. The initiative aimed to increase food production by providing farmers with affordable, reliable access to tractors for land preparation, enabling them to cultivate more land and grow more crops.
Project Overview & Objectives
- Objective 1: Increase Agricultural Productivity
The TSSP program focuses on increasing the productivity of smallholder farmers by providing them with efficient and affordable tractor services. With the help of tractors, farmers can prepare more land in less time, improving crop yields and ensuring better food security for their families and communities. - Objective 2: Improve Access to Farming Technology
The project aims to bridge the technological gap in agriculture by giving farmers access to modern farming tools and machinery. Access to tractors helps farmers adopt more efficient farming methods, reducing manual labor and increasing productivity. - Objective 3: Promote Economic Growth and Job Creation
By helping farmers increase their agricultural output, the TSSP contributes to the local economy, creating jobs both directly and indirectly. It also contributes to the growth of the agricultural sector, which is the backbone of the economy in rural Ghana. - Objective 4: Empower Women Farmers
The TSSP gives preference to women, especially widowed and divorced women, who often have less access to resources and support. By targeting marginalized women farmers, the project empowers them to become more self-sufficient, improve their livelihoods, and play an active role in the agricultural sector.
Target Beneficiaries
The TSSP primarily targets marginalized farmers in rural and peri-urban areas who face challenges accessing tractor services. Special emphasis is placed on women, particularly widows, and divorced women, as they are often the most vulnerable members of rural communities. The key beneficiaries include:
- Smallholder Farmers: Farmers with small to medium-sized farms who cannot afford the high cost of renting tractors or do not have access to mechanized farming tools.
- Widowed and Divorced Women: Women who are often excluded from economic opportunities and need support to ensure food security and financial independence for themselves and their families.
- Marginalized Communities: Farmers from marginalized communities, including those with limited access to government support or private sector services.
- Young Farmers: Farmers under the age of 35, especially those seeking to transition from subsistence farming to more commercial agricultural practices.
Program Structure & Implementation
The TSSP provides a complete solution for land preparation during the farming season. The key components of the program include:
- Provision of Tractor Services:
The TSSP offers subsidized tractor services for plowing, harrowing, and land preparation. This service is provided at a fraction of the cost of traditional tractor rentals, ensuring that even the most vulnerable farmers can access it. - Tractor Fleet Ownership:
We have a network of tractor owners we have partnered with to provide the service. But the long term goal of Lodoac Brains is to own our own tractor fleet, with the support of donor organizations to ensure consistent service quality and availability. This eliminates the risk of breakdowns and delays associated with rented tractors, allowing the program to serve farmers more efficiently. - Targeted Subsidies:
To ensure affordability, the program provides subsidized rates for tractor services. In some cases, particularly for vulnerable women, the subsidies are more significant, reducing the burden on farmers who would otherwise struggle to pay for plowing services. - Ongoing Maintenance and Support:
The tractors are regularly maintained and serviced to ensure they remain in optimal condition. This reduces the risk of breakdowns and delays during critical farming periods. - Partnerships with Local Farmers:
Lodoac Brains works closely with local farmers and farming groups to ensure that tractor services are accessible to those who need them most. The program also fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing among farmers to improve agricultural practices in the region.

The core aim of the WIHI project is to equip young women with professional hairdressing skills that will allow them to serve their communities and beyond. By mastering the art of hair styling, cutting, braiding, and more, beneficiaries can build sustainable careers and businesses. - Objective 2: Promote Economic Independence and Self-Sufficiency
The project aims to foster economic empowerment by enabling women to create their own businesses or join the thriving beauty industry, which is an essential part of every community. - Objective 3: Enhance Personal Confidence and Social Mobility
Beyond just providing technical skills, WIHI aims to boost the personal confidence of the women by equipping them with a skill that improves their social mobility and standing within the community. Gaining mastery in hairdressing can lead to enhanced self-esteem and greater respect.

- Head Potters (Kayayei) who migrate to urban centers for work and struggle to find steady employment.
- Victims of Broken Homes who need access to an income-generating skill to support themselves and their families.
- Widows who are seeking to gain financial independence and security.

Impact of the WIHI Project
Since its inception, the WIHI project has transformed the lives of many women, giving them the skills they need to thrive in the competitive beauty industry. Some of the key achievements and outcomes include:
- Successful Pilot Program in 2021:
The first batch of WIHI beneficiaries are due for graduation in 2025. 256 women have been successfully trained and expected to join the beauty workforce or establish their own businesses in 2025 or work as freelance businesses, providing services to their communities. - Job Creation and Income Generation:
More than 256 women have benefited from the training, with 90% of them ready to start their own businesses or working as freelance hairdressers. This will create direct jobs and a stable income source for their families. - Increased Access to Affordable Beauty Services:
The program has helped make professional hairdressing services more accessible in rural communities, where such services were previously scarce or prohibitively expensive. - Entrepreneurship and Business Development:
Graduates of the WIHI program are not just employees; they are business owners. By equipping women with business skills, the project has enabled women to become entrepreneurs, improving their financial independence and contributing to the local economy.

Future Goals & Sustainability Plan
Lodoac Brains is committed to ensuring the long-term success and sustainability of the WIHI project. Our future plans include:
- Expansion to Other Regions:
We aim to expand the WIHI project to other parts of Ghana and even across the African continent, empowering more women with hairdressing skills and creating more job opportunities. - Integration with Digital Platforms:
We are exploring the development of a digital learning platform where women can learn hairdressing techniques and business management remotely, expanding access to training and breaking geographical barriers. - Salon Cooperative Models:
By organizing beneficiaries into salon cooperatives, we plan to create collaborative spaces where women can share resources, increase their collective purchasing power, and scale their businesses. This will also help them access larger markets. - Ongoing Mentorship and Capacity Building:
To ensure that the businesses of WIHI graduates thrive in the long term, we plan to establish an entrepreneurial mentorship network, providing ongoing advice and support to help women sustain and expand their businesses.
