TECH-ACCELERATED TRACTOR SERVICE SUPPORT PROGRAM (TATSSP 2025)

The Tech-Accelerated Tractor Service Support Program (TATSSP) is an ambitious, scaled-up version of Lodoac Brains’ transformative agricultural initiative. Building on the successful pilot phase of the original TSSP in 2022, TATSSP 2025 integrates technology and mechanization to enhance productivity, empower marginalized farmers, and ensure food security across more districts in Ghana.

This year, TATSSP focuses on scaling its proven impact while incorporating digital tools, additional resources, and expanded operations to serve more farmers and communities. The program targets underserved populations, particularly women and youth, to foster inclusive economic growth and sustainable agricultural development.

Background and Genesis

In 2022, the pilot phase of the Tractor Service Support Program (TSSP) served as a beacon of hope for smallholder farmers in the Upper West Region, addressing key challenges such as limited access to tractor services, delayed plowing, and low yields. With just five tractors, the program reached 1,400 farmers across four districts:

  • Wa Municipality
  • Wa East District
  • Daffiama-Bussie-Issa District
  • Lawra Municipality

The pilot’s impact was remarkable:

  • Farmers accessed affordable tractor services, enabling timely land preparation.
  • Over 1,400 jobs were created, boosting local economies.
  • Subsidies saved farmers 72,000 cedis, making land cultivation more affordable.
  • Women farmers, particularly widows and divorcees, gained vital economic independence.

These outcomes underscored the need for scaling and enhancing the program.

TATSSP 2025: Scaling Up

Expanded District Coverage

TATSSP 2025 scales operations to include two additional districts:

  • Wa West District
  • Nadowli-Kaleo District

This expansion increases the program’s reach to a total of six districts, ensuring that even more smallholder farmers benefit from its services.

Increased Resources and Support

To support the expanded operations and achieve greater impact, TATSSP 2025 requires:

  1. A Pickup Vehicle: For effective monitoring, coordination, and logistics across the six districts.
  2. Five Additional Tractors: To ensure timely and consistent service delivery to a growing number of farmers.

Project Objectives

Objective 1: Boost Agricultural Productivity

Provide subsidized tractor services for plowing and land preparation to help farmers cultivate larger areas and achieve higher yields.

Objective 2: Integrate Technology for Efficiency

Use digital platforms for service booking, subsidy tracking, and providing tailored farming advice, ensuring greater accessibility and efficiency.

Objective 3: Empower Marginalized Groups

Focus on supporting women, widows, and divorcees who often face resource constraints. Youth farmers are also a key demographic, driving innovation and sustainability in agriculture.

Objective 4: Strengthen Food Security

Enhance agricultural output to combat food insecurity and improve nutrition in rural communities.

Objective 5: Create Jobs and Drive Economic Growth

Expand job opportunities in farming, tractor operations, and support services, while boosting incomes for smallholder farmers.

Key Components of TATSSP 2025

1. Digital Accessibility

  • Farmers can book tractor services via mobile apps or USSD for ease of access.
  • Real-time updates on service availability and subsidy balances promote transparency and efficiency.

2. Affordable Mechanization

  • Subsidized rates ensure that tractor services are within reach of even the most vulnerable farmers. Women farmers receive preferential support, with subsidies covering up to 75% of plowing costs.

3. Capacity Building

  • Farmers are trained on sustainable farming practices, digital tools, and crop diversification.
  • Local technicians receive training in tractor maintenance, ensuring the longevity of machinery and uninterrupted services.

4. Operational Efficiency

  • The addition of five new tractors and a pickup vehicle enables seamless service delivery across all six districts.
  • Regular maintenance and servicing reduce the risk of delays during peak farming periods.

5. Sustainable Practices

  • TATSSP encourages climate-smart agriculture, including precision plowing to optimize land use and renewable-powered tractor solutions in the long term.
