Women into Tailoring Initiative (WITI)
The Women into Tailoring Initiative (WITI) is a pioneering project launched by Lodoac Brains in 2017, aimed at empowering young women in vulnerable communities through skill development and vocational training in tailoring. The project was designed to offer a sustainable path to economic independence for women, particularly those who face significant socio-economic barriers, such as orphans, school dropouts, teenage mothers, and women from poverty-stricken homes.
Project Genesis
The idea for WITI was born out of a need to address the significant gaps in both employment opportunities and the development of practical skills in rural communities. Many women in underserved areas had limited access to formal education and lacked the skills required to secure stable employment. Furthermore, the high rate of unemployment in these regions exacerbated the challenges these women faced, leaving them with few prospects for financial independence. Recognizing these challenges, Lodoac Brains initiated the WITI project to empower women through vocational training that would help them build sustainable livelihoods.
Project Overview & Objectives
- Objective 1: Empowerment through Skills Training
The primary objective of WITI is to provide young women with the skills needed to secure stable livelihoods through tailoring. The program not only teaches basic tailoring skills but also promotes entrepreneurship by encouraging participants to start their own businesses after completion. - Objective 2: Financial Independence for Women
By equipping women with the skills to make and sell clothing, WITI aims to increase their financial independence, enabling them to support themselves and their families. This economic freedom can help break the cycle of poverty, especially for women in marginalized communities. - Objective 3: Holistic Support System
The WITI program offers a fully sponsored training package, including the cost of training, sewing machines, and repair services. This ensures that women can access all the resources they need to succeed, regardless of their financial background.
Target Beneficiaries
WITI specifically targets young women who face socio-economic challenges and have limited access to formal education or employment opportunities. These beneficiaries include:
- Orphans who have lost their parents and struggle to access resources for education and skills development.
- School Dropouts who were unable to complete formal education due to financial or personal reasons.
- Teenage Mothers who face stigma and limited career opportunities.
- Women from Poverty-Stricken Homes who have limited resources to access vocational training.
- Head Potters (Kayayei) who migrate to cities for work but lack the skills to secure stable jobs.
- Victims of Broken Homes who face economic hardship due to family breakdowns.
- Widows who need a sustainable source of income for their families.
Program Structure & Implementation
- Training Duration:
The WITI program is structured as an intensive apprenticeship lasting up to 3 years, during which beneficiaries are taught the full spectrum of tailoring skills, including sewing techniques, pattern making, fabric selection, and garment production. - Resources Provided:
- Sewing Machines: Every beneficiary receives a sewing machine upon enrollment and another one upon completion of the training program, enabling them to start their own tailoring business.
- Repair Services: We provide free repair services for the machines to ensure they remain functional throughout the training period and beyond.
- Business Development: Participants are also trained in basic business management, including how to price their products, manage finances, and build a customer base.
- Post-Training Support:
After completing their training, beneficiaries are not left to face challenges alone. The program offers Aftercare Consultancy, where trained women are given ongoing support, advice, and business mentorship to help them succeed in the long term.
Impact of the WITI Project
Since its inception, WITI has had a profound impact on the lives of hundreds of young women, contributing to significant socio-economic change within their communities. Some of the key successes and measurable impacts include:
- Empowering 250 Women in the First Cohort:
From March 2017 to March 2020, the first cohort of 250 young women completed the training, equipping them with the necessary skills to either join the workforce or launch their own tailoring businesses. - Expansion to 11 Districts:
What started as a pilot project in one district has expanded to all 11 districts of the Upper West Region of Ghana, with 1,357 total beneficiaries under training through WITI. - Job Creation & Economic Empowerment:
Beneficiaries who have completed the WITI program have gone on to create small businesses, hire employees, and serve their communities, thus contributing to local economies. In total, more than 1,000 direct jobs have been created across all districts. - Increased Family Income:
Many women have reported significant increases in their household income, as they are now able to support their families through tailoring. This financial independence has a ripple effect, improving the overall quality of life for their children and families. - Social Change & Empowerment:
Through the program, women gain confidence, social status, and recognition in their communities, empowering them to become active contributors to the development of their societies. Many have become role models for other women in their villages, inspiring them to pursue similar paths.
